    NEW ORLEANS - Gen. Glenn M. Walters, Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps, addresses the audience at the kick-off ceremony of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Centennial at the National World War II Museum in New Orleans, Aug. 26, 2016. Marine Forces Reserve will celebrate 100 years of service by running a series of events across the nation remembering the Marine Corps’ history, heritage, and esprit de corps, while also looking to the future.     MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, North Carolina -- Montford Point, North Carolina. This was segregated training ground from 1942 to 1949 for the nation’s first African-American Marines. Now, a new memorial stands outside the gates of Camp Johnson to commemorate their historic achievements in the face of racial segregation. Click for full story.

    For the first time in 14 years, the military is rewriting its body composition standards and the methods used to determine whether troops are too fat to serve. Pentagon officials intend to publish a new policy later this year, a document expected to have sweeping effects on how the military defines and measures health and fitness. The review comes amid rising concern about obesity. Among civilians, it is shrinking the pool of qualified prospective recruits. And in the active-duty force, a rising number of overweight troops poses risks to readiness and health care costs." Full story click here

    The MCRA would like to congratulate 2Lt. Zack Polson as the latest recipient of 

    the Maj Keith Wells award for excellence in land navigation.  Zack is a member

     of "B" Company and graduated on 29 June.  He hails from Minnetonka, MN and 

    is a graduate of U. of Wisconsin-eau Claire majoring in Economics. He is an 

    0302 and begins his MOS training on 6 July. Here is MCRA National President

    On 16 April, the Marine Corps Reserve Association was honored to be invited to attend the promotion ceremony of Col. Brad James to Brigadier General, USMCR.  The ceremony took place in Marietta, GA with a large number of former Marine Corps Reserve General Officers in attendance; BGen Denny Shortal, the current Mayor of Dunwoody, GA; MajGen Larry Taylor; and LtGen Jack Bergman, former Commander, MFR.  Current MFR leadership in attendance included BGen Ray Descheneaux, Assistant Deputy Commandant for Aviation; Col Kurt Stein who has been selected also for promotion to BGen; and Col Tim Adams, Deputy Commanding Officer, Marine Aircraft Group-49.

    The ceremony was presided by LtGen Rex McMillian, Commander, MFR.  BGen Brad James next duty assignment will be as Commanding General, 4th Marine Aircraft Wing.  CONGRATULATIONS BGen James from all members of the MCRA!

    Hector Cafferata, Medal of Honor recipient passes away at 86

    Hector Cafferata

    Hector Cafferata, who received the Medal of Honor after waging a lone battle – in ankle-deep snow and in his stocking feet – against enemy forces during the Korean War's storied Chosin Reservoir battle, died April 12 at a hospice Venice, Fla. He was 86.

    Mr. Cafferata, a burly 6-foot-2 semipro football player, joined the Marine Corps Reserve in 1948. Activated for the Korean War in 1950, he was a private assigned to the 1st Marine Division. His unit was charged with protecting an escape route for other Marines in a mountainous region near the Chosin Reservoir in modern-day North Korea.  Click here for story.

     LtGen Rex McMillian assumed command of Marine Forces Reserve and Marine Forces North during a change of command ceremony held at Marine Corps Support Facility New Orleans, Louisiana, 12Sept2015.  LtGen Mills was quoted saying “I have served with [Lt. Gen.] McMillian before and I know he brings great knowledge and experience as a Marine,” said Mills. “I leave here very hopeful and very inspired.”

    Through his career, Mills comma
    nded the 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines Regiment as well as the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, which participated in Operation Joint Guardian in Kosovo and combat operations in Iraq as part of Task Force Tarawa under his command. Shortly after assuming command as the 1st Marine Division commander, Mills was selected to command the I Marine Expeditionary Force, which deployed to Afghanistan as part of the International Security Assistance Force. In 2010, he assumed command of the newly created ISAF Regional Command and was the first Marine Corps general to command NATO forces in combat. Upon promotion to Lieutenant General, he assumed the duties as the commanding general of Marine Corps Combat Development Command in Quantico, Virginia, and as Deputy Commandant for Combat Development and Integration, Headquarters U.S. Marine Corps, and Commander of Marine Corps Forces Cyberspace Command. “I have served with [Lt. Gen.] McMillian before and I know he brings great knowledge and experience as a Marine,” said Mills. “I leave here very hopeful and very inspired.”

    McMillian graduated from the Univ
    ersity of Southern California and was commissioned in 1980 via the Platoon Leaders Class program. A naval aviator by trade, he completed flight school in 1982 and has accumulated more than 3,000 flight hours during his career in numerous platforms. Throughout his career, McMillian has commanded the Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 134, served as deputy commander for Marine Aircraft Group 46, as well as deputy CG, of Marine Corps Forces Pacific. He also served as deputy CG for I Marine Expeditionary Force, and CG, 4th Marine Aircraft Wing.

    In his first speech as the new Commander for MarForRes/MarForNorth during the ceremony, McMillian thanked the crowd for their presence, expressed his excitement and hopes for his new position, and addressed the Marines under his leadership. “I am very proud to be standing here as your CG" said McMillian. “I am looking forward to the next two years and to the opportunity to get to know all of you and to serve with you, Semper Fidelis.”

    Early in the morning on August 7, 2015, golfers and supporters gathered at the Ft. Belvoir golf course to participate in this year’s MCRA annual golf tournament in partnership with the Semper Fi Fund.

    The annual golf tournament has been a hallmark event for the MCRA for many years and has contributed significant donations, which have supported our nation’s wounded warriors.  This year, corporate sponsorship, participation, and donations were at an all time high!

    Additionally, the Marine Corps Reserve Association was proud to host the First Lady of the Marine Corps.

    The annual convention is rapidly approaching.  This year it is being held at MCB San Diego, CA.  Here is an updated list of events:

    10 Sept (Thursday):   1800: No host social @ "Stone Brewery"
     11 Sept (FRIDAY):
    - 0800-0830: Colors ceremony, MCRD San Diego. We will be guests of the CG.
    - 0830-0915: Breakfast @ Bayview Rest, MCRD San Diego
    - 1000-1130: MCRD recruit graduation. We will be guests of the CG.
    - 1130-1300: LUNCH
    - 1330-1430: Recruit training tour, to be conducted by the base personnel
    - 1430-1630: We have choice of being provided a tour of the MCRD SD command museum &/or a tour of the USS MIDWAY
    - 1800-????: Evening dinner, hosted by the "Howling Mad Smith" Chapter @ Bay Shore Marina
    12 Sept  (SATURDAY):
    - 0800-1630: Convention, BUILDING 7W on base.
    - **spouses in attendance are invited to attend "High Tea" at the Hotel Del Coronado: 1200 - 1400
    - 1800-????: Evening dinner @ Casa Guadalajara Restaurant

    The Marines of 3/23 decided to do something unique to commemorate and honor those that paid the ultimate sacrifice in defense of this great nation over the Memorial Day weekend. These Marines went on a 65 mile hump over a 30 hour period. As they humped from south of Hot Springs, AR to the veterans cemetery in North Little Rock, AR they were meet by Marines - family members of Marines and friends of Marines. At the entrance of the ce...metery they were also welcomed & met by members of the Marine Corps League, former Marines, parents, and friends. 

    BN CO & Life Member, LtCol Alexander “Sander” Snowden was leading the way with his Marines. Look close & you will see him wearing the MCRA T-SHIRT.  We are fortunate that the defense of this country is in such dedicated and capable hands. To the Marines of 3/23 and LtCol Snowden well done & a big Oorah!
